Stroke ….The Road to Recovery

In the past seven months our world has been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 crisis. As early as March 2020,  providers and healthcare systems have scrambled to accommodate the growing number of patients that have entered the hospital with the coronavirus.  At the risk of contracting  COVID-19, family members were not allowed to be with their loved ones. As the year 2020 winds down, in the United States of America and across the globe, providers,  hospitals, and healthcare systems have opened their doors to patients that have illnesses that aren’t related to the coronavirus.

The hardest hit population by COVID-19 and stroke has been the elderly. Globally, stroke is the second leading cause of death.  Afraid of being exposed to the coronavirus, patients who had the signs and symptoms of an initial stroke did not go to the doctor. As a result, the patient suffered more severe incidents  with the result of partial or permanent damage.   The initial signs and symptoms for stroke are the acronym FAST:

  1. Facial drooping
  2. Arm weakness
  3. Speech difficulties
  4. Time to call emergency services
